Q: What is a strike?
A: A strike is when workers decide to collectively withhold their labor by refusing to work. Either for a fixed time or until their demands are met.

Q: Why would we strike?
A: Strikes are the most powerful way for workers to affect change in the workplace. We would strike to protest New Seasons Market’s stalling and refusal to bargain with us in good faith and  with an open mind, and show that we are serious about doing what’s necessary in the future to prevent unfairness.

Q: How long would the strike be? 
We will vote on whether to authorize an “Unfair Labor Practice” strike that will last one day.

Q: What am I expected to do during a strike? 
A: Show up to the picket line. Bring your family and make sure everyone in your store participates in all strike actions. Winning this fight demands the full participation of all of us to show New Seasons management that we are united, determined to be treated fairly, and will not back down.

Q: Can I get fired for going on strike?
A: No. You are protected by the federal laws that make it illegal to fire or discipline workers for engaging in concerted activity, including strikes. You cannot be disciplined for being absent during a lawful strike, even if you are on a final warning for attendance. 

P: ¿Qué es una huelga?
R: Una huelga es cuando los trabajadores deciden colectivamente retener su trabajo al negarse a trabajar, ya sea por un tiempo determinado o hasta que se cumplan sus demandas.

P: ¿Por qué haríamos una huelga?
R: Las huelgas son la forma más poderosa que tienen los trabajadores para lograr cambios en el lugar de trabajo. Haríamos huelga para protestar contra la demora y el rechazo de New Seasons Market a negociar con nosotros de buena fe y con una mente abierta, y para demostrar que estamos comprometidos a hacer lo necesario en el futuro para prevenir la injusticia.

P: ¿Cuánto duraría la huelga?
Votaremos si autorizamos una huelga por "Práctica Laboral Injusta" que durará un día.

P: ¿Qué se espera de mí durante una huelga?
R: Participación en la línea de piquete. Trae a tu familia y asegúrate de que todos en tu tienda participen en todas las acciones de la huelga. Ganar esta lucha exige la plena participación de todos nosotros para demostrar a la gerencia  de New Seasons que estamos unidos, decididos a ser tratados de manera justa y que no vamos a retroceder 

P: ¿Pueden despedirme por hacer huelga?
R: No. Estás protegido por las leyes federales que hacen ilegal despedir o disciplinar a los trabajadores por participar en actividades concertadas, incluidas las huelgas. No puedes ser disciplinado por estar ausente durante una huelga legal, incluso si ya tienes una advertencia final por asistencia.

Q: How long will the strike voting be open? 
A: The strike authorization vote will be open for ten days. Voting will open on August 15th and close at 11:59 PM on August 25th.

Q: Where can I vote?
A: This vote will be a secret ballot election administered for NSLU by a third-party vendor called OPAVote. You will get an email from OPAVote with your link and code to vote. If you do not receive this email by August 16th, please contact your store’s chapter representatives, or email newseasonslaborunion@gmail.com

Q: What does a Yes vote mean? What does a No vote mean? 
A: A “Yes” vote means you are authorizing NSLU to go on a 1-day strike in the near future. Voting “No” means that you do not authorize NSLU to strike in the near future. The Steering Committee will determine the exact day and time of the strike.

P: ¿Cuánto tiempo estará abierta la votación para la huelga?
R: La votación para la autorización de la huelga estará abierta durante diez días. La votación comenzará el 15 de Agosto y se cerrará a las 11:59 PM el 25 de Agosto.

P: ¿Qué significa votar "Sí"? ¿Qué significa votar "No"?
R: Votar "Sí" significa que estás autorizando a NSLU a realizar una huelga de un día en un futuro cercano. Votar "No" significa que no autorizas a NSLU a realizar una huelga en un futuro cercano. El Comité Directivo determinará el día y la hora exactos de la huelga.

Q: If we go on strike, do we still get paid?
A: You will not be paid for the hours you are on strike. The only compensation for going on strike is what we are able to get out of the boss when our demands are eventually met.

Q: I can't afford to miss a shift without PTO. How can I afford to go on strike?
A: We are hoping to strike in the same pay period as a double-time holiday, so that paychecks are not smaller than usual. Most of us live paycheck-to-paycheck and are in the same boat. We intend to organize a strike fund for instances of dire need, and would time a strike to minimize the financial impact to members.

Q: Can I use PTO for the strike?
A: No you cannot, unless you are already out sick or on some type of paid leave. Please do not report to a picket line if you are sick. 

Q: Can I take a pre-approved vacation if it’s during the same time as the strike? 
A: Yes, you can take approved vacation days and/ or medical. You can join strike pickets during pre-approved vacation days.

Q: Do I have to clock in or out for a strike?
A: If the strike starts in the middle of your shift, clock out when you stop work. If the strike ends part way through a scheduled shift, clock in to work when the strike ends. 

P: Si hacemos huelga, ¿seguimos recibiendo pago?
R: No se te pagará por las horas en que estés en huelga. La única compensación por hacer huelga es lo que logremos  obtener del jefe cuando finalmente se cumplan nuestras demandas.

P: No puedo darme el lujo de perder un turno sin PTO (tiempo libre pagado). ¿Cómo puedo permitirme hacer huelga?
R: Esperamos hacer huelga en el mismo período de pago que un dia feriado con doble pago, para que los cheques de pago no sean más pequeños de lo habitual. La mayoría de nosotros vivimos de cheque a cheque y estamos en la misma situación. Pedir ayuda financiera a los compañeros de trabajo, reunir recursos, posponer préstamos. Tenemos la intención de organizar un fondo de huelga para casos de necesidad extrema y planearemos la huelga en un dia que minimice  el impacto financiero para  los miembros.

P: ¿Puedo usar PTO para la huelga?
R: No, no puedes, a menos que ya estés enfermo o en algún tipo de licencia pagada. Por favor, no te presentes en la línea de piquete si estás enfermo.

P: ¿Puedo tomar unas vacaciones aprobadas previamente si coinciden con el tiempo de la huelga?
R: Sí, puedes tomar los días de vacaciones aprobados y/o días por motivos médicos. Puedes unirte a los piquetes de la huelga durante los días de vacaciones aprobados.

P: ¿Tengo que checar entrada o salida  durante una huelga?
R: Si la huelga comienza en medio de tu turno, checa tu salida  cuando dejes de trabajar. Si la huelga termina antes de que finalice un turno programado, checa tu entrada  a trabajar cuando termine la huelga.

Q: What is a picket line?
A: A picket line is a line of strikers and their families who hold picket signs in front of a struck business. Many customers, other workers, and every union truck driver will refuse to cross a picket line. A strong picket line is necessary to win a strike. 

Q: Can I just stay home instead of picketing?
A: Staying off the picket line hurts the chances of the strike winning its demands. You should go to your store and participate on the picket line for at least a couple of hours.

Q: What if I cross the picket line to work?
A: If you cross the picket line to work, you can cause the strike to be lost. A lost strike can set back bargaining by months or years and can cause irreversible damage to the livelihoods of your coworkers. NSLU will not take action against you if you cross the picket line, but doing so is harmful to the interests of every worker in NSLU.

Q: Who will support us in this fight? 
A: In addition to 1100 fellow members, you have the support of  other labor unions, community groups, elected officials, and so many of our fellow community members. NSLU has always stood in solidarity with other unions and community groups in their fights, and in turn they will stand with us in our fight. 

Q: Can non-union members or members of other unions join our strike line? 
A: Yes. Other workers can lend support and make an individual decision not to cross our picket line. Employees who are non-union should refuse to cross the picket line and notify their supervisors. Members of other unions should call their union steward or rep. 

Q: What will we ask of our customers during a strike? 
A: We will ask our customers to shop at other stores when we are on strike, and to come back to shop with us when we are no longer on strike. We will also ask our customers to join our picket lines. 

Q: Can I go inside to get my belongings during a strike?
A:  Please collect your belongings out of your locker well before a strike starts. The building may be closed at any time by the company, and you should not enter the building during the strike. If you absolutely must enter the store, please ask your picket captain.

P: ¿Qué es una línea de piquete?
R: Una línea de piquete es una fila de huelguistas y sus familias que sostienen pancartas de piquete frente a un negocio en huelga. Muchos clientes, otros trabajadores y cada conductor de camión sindical se negarán a cruzar una línea de piquete. Una línea de piquete fuerte es necesaria para ganar una huelga.

P: ¿Puedo simplemente quedarme en casa en lugar de hacer piquete?
R: No participar en la línea de piquete reduce las posibilidades de que la huelga logre sus demandas. Deberías ir a tu tienda y participar en la línea de piquete al menos por un par de horas.

P: ¿Qué pasa si cruzo la línea de piquete para trabajar?
R: Si cruzas la línea de piquete para trabajar, puedes hacer que la huelga se pierda. Una huelga perdida puede retrasar las negociaciones por meses o años y puede causar un daño irreversible a la  vida de tus compañeros de trabajo. NSLU no tomará medidas en tu contra si cruzas la línea de piquete, pero hacerlo es perjudicial para los intereses de todos los trabajadores en NSLU.

P: ¿Quién nos apoyará en esta lucha?
R: Además de los 1100 compañeros miembros, cuentas con el apoyo de otros sindicatos, grupos comunitarios, funcionarios electos y muchos de nuestros compañeros de la comunidad. NSLU siempre ha estado en solidaridad con otros sindicatos y grupos comunitarios en sus luchas, y a su vez ellos estarán con nosotros en nuestra lucha.

P: ¿Pueden los miembros no sindicalizados o de otros sindicatos unirse a nuestra línea de huelga?
R: Sí. Otros trabajadores pueden brindar apoyo y tomar la decisión individual de no cruzar nuestra línea de piquete. Los empleados que no son sindicalizados deben negarse a cruzar la línea de piquete y notificar a sus supervisores. Los miembros de otros sindicatos deben llamar a su delegado o representante sindical.

P: ¿Qué pediremos a nuestros clientes durante una huelga?
R: Pediremos a nuestros clientes que compren en otras tiendas cuando estemos en huelga, y que vuelvan a comprar con nosotros cuando ya no estemos en huelga. También pediremos a nuestros clientes que se unan a nuestras líneas de piquete.

P: ¿Puedo entrar a la tienda para recoger mis pertenencias durante una huelga?
R: Por favor, recoge tus pertenencias de tu casillero mucho antes de que comience una huelga. La empresa puede cerrar el edificio en cualquier momento, y no debes entrar al edificio durante la huelga. Sí absolutamente necesitas entrar a la tienda, por favor consulta con el capitán de piquete.
